Why Uli Jon Roth left Scorpions, and how he had joined the band

Uli Jon Roth left Scorpions for purely artistic reasons: he had started writing material that did not fit the band, and he needed a different platform and more freedom. As he tells Guitar World, he resigned in 1977; his official biography places his final tour with the band in April 1978. The split was amicable.

7 notes on disputed or unconfirmed data
  • The year he joined Scorpions is disputed. The official biography says 1973, and 'summer of 1973' in its version archived in May 2026; Spanish Wikipedia specifies June 29, 1973 (a single-source detail); English Wikipedia dates his tenure between 1974 and 1977 and, in another passage, his departure to 1978. No primary source settles the difference.
  • Resignation and departure are not the same date. Roth places his resignation in 1977, and the official biography places his final tour with the band in April 1978. No public document has been found that explains what happened in between.
  • The official biography at ulijonroth.com was rewritten after May 2026 and no longer includes the summer of 1973, Michael Schenker's request, Electric Sun's last concert or the recording of Scorpions Revisited. Those facts are cited from the May 17, 2026 copy preserved in the Internet Archive.
  • The statement about his reasons for leaving comes from a 2023 Guitar World interview whose text sits behind restricted access. It is cited with a link to the original so you can check it.
  • Conflicting dates for 'Scorpions Revisited': English Wikipedia says February 2015 and the Discogs entry for the German edition lists 2014. The recording too: 2014 in Hanover according to Wikipedia, and the autumn of 2013 according to the version of the official biography archived in May 2026.
  • On 'Virgin Killer' (1976), this page deals only with the musical work and the meaning of the title according to its composer.

The short answer: he resigned in 1977, for artistic reasons, and on good terms

Uli Jon Roth left Scorpions because the music he was writing no longer fit in the band. This is how he tells it: he resigned in 1977, and the reason was purely artistic. He had begun writing material such as “Earthquake” that did not suit the group, and he needed a different platform and more freedom. The split, by that same account, was amicable. Guitar World reports it in a 2023 interview.

The sources consulted offer no alternative version: no firing, no personal falling-out, no money dispute. And one detail fits neatly: Earthquake is also the title of the first album by Electric Sun, the band he put together afterward, released in 1979 on the German label Brain. The two facts are documented separately; it is Roth himself who links them when explaining why he left.

Resignation in 1977, departure in April 1978: two dates that coexist

What is being dated What it says Source
The resignation Submitted in 1977 Guitar World, 2023
The final tour with the band April 1978, in Tokyo Official biography
The full tenure Studio albums “between 1974 and 1977”; left in 1978 English Wikipedia
The full tenure June 29, 1973 – April 1978 Spanish Wikipedia

Resigning from a band and no longer playing in it are not the same act, which would explain why the two dates coexist without contradicting each other. But it needs saying precisely: none of the sources consulted documents what happened between the moment he handed in his resignation and the moment he left the group. If someone tells you about it in detail, ask them for the source.

How he joined Scorpions: Dawn Road and the gap Michael Schenker left

Uli Jon Roth came to Scorpions from his own band, Dawn Road, which merged with the remaining members of Scorpions after Michael Schenker left for UFO. That is the account in his official biography, which places the moment in 1973; the version archived in May 2026 specified the summer of that year.

A limit needs marking here. The sources document the sequence — Schenker leaves for UFO, Dawn Road and Scorpions merge, Roth stays on as lead guitarist — but they do not document who proposed the merger or on what terms. The version in which Schenker asked Uli to take his spot rests on a single source: the official biography archived in May 2026 says that, before leaving, Michael asked him to take his place. The current version of the biography no longer mentions it, and no other source has been found to confirm it.

1973 or 1974: the year he joined is not settled

Source Year it gives
Official biography (ulijonroth.com) 1973 (summer of 1973 in the version archived in May 2026)
Spanish Wikipedia June 29, 1973
English Wikipedia Studio albums between 1974 and 1977; left in 1978

The most plausible explanation is that each source is dating something different: joining the band (1973) or the first album released with him in the lineup, Fly to the Rainbow, of November 1, 1974. It is a reasonable hypothesis, not a verified fact: no primary source has been found to confirm it. And “June 29, 1973” is a single-source detail, so treat it as such.

That is why this archive writes his tenure as 1973/1974–1978, and no other way.

The five Scorpions albums with Uli Jon Roth

Album Release Label Type
Fly to the Rainbow November 1, 1974 RCA Records Studio
In Trance September 17, 1975 RCA Records Studio
Virgin Killer November 22, 1976 RCA Records Studio
Taken by Force December 1977 RCA Records Studio
Tokyo Tapes August 15, 1978 RCA Records Double live

Source for the dates: Scorpions discography on English Wikipedia.

Four studio albums and a double live album in four years. Taken by Force came out in December 1977, the same year in which, by his own account, he had already resigned. That album includes “The Sails of Charon,” written entirely by Roth, a track whose solo Kirk Hammett partly quoted in Metallica’s “Battery”; Roth did not find out until a friend in Los Angeles told him.

Tokyo Tapes: the live album came out after he had left the band

Tokyo Tapes was released on August 15, 1978, and Uli Jon Roth had left Scorpions in April of that year. The double live album therefore reached stores about four months after his departure, and it is the last title of his era.

This is the point to be honest about what this archive can and cannot claim. The sources verified for this page document the album, its format, its date and its label, but they contain no dates for the Japanese concerts, no venues, no sales figures and no chart positions in Japan. All of that circulates online without attribution and will not be repeated here until it can be tied to a checkable source.

What is documented is that he returned to that material much later: Tokyo Tapes Revisited: Live in Japan was released on December 16, 2016, on the UDR label.

Virgin Killer (1976): what the title means according to its composer

The song “Virgin Killer” was written by Uli Jon Roth, and he has explained that the meaning of the title has been misunderstood: “virgin killer” refers to time, which gradually kills people’s innocence. The point is recorded in Spanish Wikipedia.

In this archive, Virgin Killer is exactly that: the third studio album of his era, released on November 22, 1976, on RCA. Half a century later it is the backbone of the tour Roth has on the road right now, and he himself ranks it among the most important things he has recorded: “one of the most important albums I have recorded in my life,” in the official announcement of his 2026 Wacken Open Air appearance.

What came next: Electric Sun (1978–1985)

Roth formed Electric Sun in 1978, the same year he left Scorpions, and the band was active until 1985, with three studio albums:

Album Year Label
Earthquake 1979 Brain
Fire Wind 1981 Brain
Beyond the Astral Skies 1985 EMI

Earthquake is dedicated “to the spirit of Jimi Hendrix.” Electric Sun’s last concert was on July 4, 1985, at the Milwaukee Beer Fest, according to the version of his official biography archived in May 2026. If that period interests you, it is covered in depth on the Electric Sun page.

Going back to that music: Wacken 2006, Scorpions Revisited and the 2026 tour

Roth did not close the door on his Scorpions years: there are three documented occasions on which he has returned to them.

  • Wacken Open Air 2006. He reunited with Scorpions to play four songs from his era, according to English Wikipedia.
  • Scorpions Revisited. A re-recording of material from those years, with Nathan James and Liz Vandall on vocals and Sascha Paeth producing. Careful with the date: English Wikipedia places it in February 2015 (UDR Music/Warner) and the Discogs entry for the German edition lists 2014. There is no agreement on the recording either: Hanover in 2014, according to Wikipedia, or the autumn of 2013, according to the version of the official biography archived in May 2026. Nobody settles it.
  • Virgin Killer 50th Anniversary Tour (2026). The tour is ongoing. In Spain he headlined the Unirock Festival in Puerto de Vega (Asturias) on August 29, 2026, and Piorno Rock XIX at the Recinto Ferial El Silo in Pinos Puente (Granada) on September 11 and 12, 2026: alongside his own songs he played several tracks from the album, and it was his only confirmed show in southern Spain.

The bridge to the Sky Guitars: 23 frets and a white Stratocaster

The Scorpions years are still present in the current Sky Guitars catalog. The Sky Super Strat, presented as an edition marking Uli Jon Roth’s 50th anniversary on stage, has a vintage Stratocaster shape and only 23 frets: it is the model with the fewest frets in the entire catalog, like the white Strat he played in his years with the band. It has an alder body, a bolt-on flamed maple neck, deep scalloping from the 3rd fret and the 18-volt Mega-Wing III system.

Its price is $14,900, the official catalog price checked on September 12, 2026, at sky-guitars.com.

A second thread closes the circle: Boris Dommenget, exclusive builder of the Sky Guitars since 2010, also built the signature guitars of Scorpions’ Matthias Jabs: his own website presents the Mastercaster and the FireAxe as Jabs signature models (dommengetguitars.com). If you are coming from the biography and want to understand the instrument, carry on with which models exist or the history of the Sky Guitar.
