How to order a Sky Guitar (and why you won't find one in a store)
Sky Guitars can only be ordered at sky-guitars.com, the maker's website, which calls itself the only official place in the world to order a new one. They are built to order: 4 to 10 months of production, a 50% deposit and catalog prices from $12,000 to $49,000. This page does not sell or broker anything.

8 notes on disputed or unconfirmed data
- Every price on this page is an official catalog price checked in September 2026 on sky-guitars.com. These are handmade, made-to-order instruments and prices can change without notice: the valid price is always the maker's.
- According to the About us page at sky-guitars.com, published prices exclude VAT or sales tax, import duties, customs fees and local taxes, which depend on the buyer's country. Shipping costs are not specified.
- Disputed figure: the number of units in the Dean edition. Dean's own page said 50 in 2010 and 25 from October 2011; the official Sky Guitars site says 50, while English Wikipedia and GuitarSite say 25. How many were actually made is not stated in any public source.
- Disputed figure: the fret count of the first Sky Guitar of 1983. Depending on the source, 29, 30, 32, 36 and 38 are all in circulation: English Wikipedia gives 30, Spanish Wikipedia 36 and Guitar Player (2025) 38. The fret counts on this page are those on the official spec sheets of the current models, not a ruling on that contradiction.
- Undocumented: the official site only details the Mega-Wing III system. Versions I and II are mentioned in passing on individual product pages and have no published specifications.
- Unverified: a figure of $13,000 circulates as the original price of the Dean edition, but it could not be confirmed in a primary source. I do not treat it as established.
- The Aurora Sky ($34,000) is listed in the official catalog, but its own product page warns that not a single unit has been built yet.
- skyguitar.site does not sell, broker or appraise instruments, and has no connection whatsoever with UJR Sky Guitars or Uli Jon Roth. The maker's official site is sky-guitars.com.
The question that has gone unanswered since 2008
On April 7, 2008, a user called “boro” asked on the Spanish guitar forum guitarristas.info: “¿Sabeis si se puede conseguir una réplica de esa guitarra?” — does anyone know whether you can get a replica of that guitar? Nobody gave him a useful answer. The thread had been opened two days earlier, on April 5, under the title Uli Jon Roth - Sky Guitar 32 trastes (“32 frets”), and it is still there, eighteen years later, without anyone having answered that question.
The short answer is yes. The long answer takes up the rest of this page.
There is only one official place to order one
The only channel for ordering a new Sky Guitar is sky-guitars.com, the maker’s website, which describes itself, in so many words, as the “only official place in the world” where you can order authentic, brand-new Uli Jon Roth Sky Guitars. The footer of that site carries the company name UJR Sky-Guitars Ltd UK.
There are no distributors. There are no stores. There is no stock you can go and try. The very structure of the site makes it clear: its menu is limited to Welcome, Sky-Store, Testimonials, About us and Contact, with no blog or news section. There is also an official Japanese version, sky-guitars-japan.com, linked from the main navigation. The official site is in English and Japanese only.
The guitars are built by hand in Germany. Boris Dommenget has been the exclusive builder of Uli Jon Roth’s Sky Guitars since 2010, and the low-impedance pickups of the Mega-Wing III system are wound by hand by Boris and Fiona Dommenget.
On the year the company was founded, the About us page states verbatim that “UJR SKY GUITARS was founded in 2017 by Uli Jon Roth”, and the UK company register backs it up: UJR SKY GUITARS LIMITED was incorporated on September 29, 2017 and is still active (Companies House). Until October 2026 this page treated it as a disputed figure, because it only appeared on that official page. The one qualification comes from Roth himself, who in MariskalRock (September 2026) places his decision to set up the company “in 2016” (en 2016); the legal incorporation dates from 2017.
What “built to order” actually means
Three conditions define the process, all published on the maker’s About us page:
- A 50% deposit when the order is placed, with the balance paid before delivery.
- Four to ten months of production. The official wording is “approximately 4–10 months, depending on the model and selected specifications”: the lead time depends on the model and on the options you choose.
- A waiting list for every model. The production clock does not start the day you pay.
Those four to ten months are not a marketing whim. Behind them are documented construction problems: the extended fingerboard leaves no room for the neck pickup and forces it to be mounted under the fingerboard itself, housing the Mega-Wing electronics gets harder as the neck grows, and the cutaway puts a physical limit on how high the last fret can go. Every instrument is a woodworking and electronics problem solved by hand.
Contact goes through the Contact section of the official site. Watch out for taxes: the About us page warns that published prices exclude “VAT/sales tax, import duties, customs fees” and any local taxes, which vary with the buyer’s country of residence. The cost of shipping is not specified anywhere, so it is exactly the first thing you should ask if you are serious.
What it costs: price ranges by family
The official catalog brings together 22 models spread across 10 series and 3 families. These are the ranges, at the official catalog price checked in September 2026 on sky-guitars.com:
| Family | Models | Price range | Most affordable | Most expensive |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pegasus | 9 | $24,000 – $49,000 | Dolphin Sky ($24,000) | Excalibur ($49,000) |
| Aquila | 5 | $12,000 – $20,000 | Zeno Sky ($12,000) | Bianca Sky 7 ($20,000) |
| Unicorn | 8 | $16,000 – $37,000 | Mahogany Sky ($16,000) | Mighty New Dawn ($37,000) |
The floor of the catalog is $12,000 (Zeno Sky) and the ceiling $49,000 (Excalibur). The model-by-model breakdown is on the prices page.
A warning about that table: the official site is not consistent with itself when assigning families. The store listing groups the Dolphin Sky and the Emperor Sky under Pegasus, while their individual product pages and the Sky Classic Series page place them in the Aquila segment. I have followed the store listing’s grouping, but the ambiguity lies with the source.
The pickup system is also sold on its own: the Mega-Wing III System costs $2,400 and its power supply $850, both at the official catalog price checked in September 2026.
Yes, there are official replicas of the original prototypes
This is the direct answer to the 2008 question. The Sky Classic Series in the current catalog consists of official replicas of four of the five prototypes Andreas “Andy” Demetriou built by hand between 1983 and 1991.
| Model | Prototype it replicates | Distinguishing feature | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dolphin Sky | 1983, the very first | 30 frets and not scalloped, like the original | $24,000 |
| Emperor Sky | 1987, the third Sky | 37 frets, medium scalloping all the way along the neck | $30,000 |
| Mighty Wing | 1989, the fourth Sky | The first seven-string; 30–39 frets | $45,000 |
| Rembrandt Sky | 1991, the fifth and last by Demetriou | 7 strings, 32 frets, the first in mahogany | $29,000 |
Official catalog prices checked in September 2026 on sky-guitars.com. The fret counts in that table are the ones each official spec sheet declares for the current replica. Exactly how many frets the 1983 Sky had is another matter entirely and remains unsettled: 29, 30, 32, 36 and 38 are all in circulation depending on the source (English Wikipedia says 30, Spanish Wikipedia 36 and Guitar Player, in 2025, 38), and the details are on how many frets a Sky Guitar has.
One detail surprises a lot of people: the Dolphin Sky is not scalloped, because the 1983 original was not either. If you take it for granted that every Sky Guitar has a scalloped fingerboard, the replica of the first prototype is going to dismantle that idea. Another detail: its official spec sheet is the only one in the catalog that mentions the Mega-Wing II, running on 9-volt batteries, instead of the 18-volt Mega-Wing III. Take that with a pinch of salt: the official site only documents the Mega-Wing III and publishes not a single specification for versions I and II, so nobody can tell you how they really differ.
The second-hand market: the Dean edition
If you are looking for a used Sky Guitar, what you will find is almost always a Dean. Between 2010 and 2011, Dean Guitars distributed a limited edition handcrafted by Boris Dommenget, the result of a collaboration between Uli Jon Roth and Elliott Rubinson, then CEO of Dean. Rubinson died in early 2017 and, according to the maker’s About us page, that same year Roth set up his own operation.
How many were made: two figures, both from Dean
There is a contradiction here that nobody has resolved, and it is worth knowing before you read any listing:
| Source | Units | Context |
|---|---|---|
| sky-guitars.com (maker) | 50 | “The first Limited Edition of 50 Sky Guitars was distributed through Dean” |
| Dean Guitars, January 2010 (archived copy) | 50 | An initial run for “50 players or collectors world wide” |
| Dean Guitars, October 2011 (archived copy) | 25 | “Only 25 total Sky Guitars (6 & 7-Strings)” |
| English Wikipedia | 25 | Dean produced 25 guitars in 2011, in six- and seven-string versions |
| GuitarSite | 25 | An ultra-limited edition announced at NAMM 2010, each one inspected and named by Roth |
I am not picking one. What can be said is where the two figures come from: Dean itself, which changed the number on its model page between 2010 and 2011, and whose figure of 25 is the one English Wikipedia cites. The most likely explanation is that the gap comes from counting the planned run against the one actually delivered, or from including or excluding the seven-string versions, but that is my hypothesis and Dean never explained the change. If someone shows you a listing claiming “one of only 25 in the world”, you now know that Dean said 50 before that and that the official Sky Guitars site still says 50.
There is also a mention of an earlier batch: the veteran fansite edenwaith.com speaks of 50 custom Sky Guitars built in 2004 by 17th Street Guitars under Roth’s supervision. It is a low-confidence claim with no backing from an official source; I mention it so it does not catch you by surprise, not as an established fact.
What has been seen listed
The only second-hand price I have been able to verify against a specific listing and URL is this one: a 2012 Dean Uli Jon Roth Sky Guitar #9 “Black Velvet Sky”, signed by Uli, listed at $11,999.99 at Ish Guitars.
There is also activity on Reverb and on eBay, but I have not been able to extract verifiable prices from those listings to cite them here.
An asking price in a listing is not a market price, nor a valuation, nor a benchmark for negotiating. It is a single data point, from one store, on one date. I do not do appraisals or give investment advice, and you should be wary of any page that offers you both for free.
A figure of $13,000 circulates as the original price of that Dean edition. I have not managed to confirm it in a primary source: Dean Guitars’ official PDF returns an error and the other sources block access. As long as that remains the case, it is not a fact.
Be careful with what is circulating out there
Two specific warnings, because a search engine is going to put both in front of you:
Do not confuse the maker with a Texas guitar store. The domain skyguitars.com belongs to Sky Guitars Music Store, a brick-and-mortar shop in Denton, Texas, with no connection to Uli Jon Roth. The maker is sky-guitars.com, with a hyphen.
There is a fake buying guide ranking in search engines. On February 13, 2026, an Alibaba portal published a so-called sky guitar buying guide, generated by AI, that talks about models costing from $300 to $2,000 and about carry-on luggage regulations. Applied to Uli Jon Roth’s Sky Guitars it is completely false: the real, verified range is $12,000 to $49,000. If a source gives you three-figure prices, it is talking about something else or about nothing at all.
I will add a third, smaller but real: the official catalog lists the Aurora Sky at $34,000, but its own product page warns that not a single unit has been built yet. Any photograph you see attributed to that model is not of that model.
This site does not sell Sky Guitars
It is worth putting in writing, not just in the footer:
- skyguitar.site does not sell guitars. There is no cart, no order form and no waiting list of its own.
- It does not broker or handle orders. I do not talk to the maker on your behalf.
- It does not appraise instruments or give investment advice.
- It has no connection whatsoever with UJR Sky Guitars, Boris Dommenget or Uli Jon Roth. It is an independent archive written by an amateur guitarist.
The only official place to order a new Sky Guitar is sky-guitars.com. The artist’s official site is ulijonroth.com. Everything you read here about prices, lead times or conditions has to be confirmed there before you spend a single dollar: I cite sources with dates; they set the conditions.
With all that said, “boro”: yes, you can get a replica. It costs $24,000, takes four to ten months, and it is not scalloped.
Frequently asked questions
Can you get a replica of Uli Jon Roth's Sky Guitar?
Yes, and the maker itself builds them. The Sky Classic Series at sky-guitars.com replicates four of Andreas Demetriou's original prototypes: Dolphin Sky (1983), Emperor Sky (1987), Mighty Wing (1989) and Rembrandt Sky (1991). They are built to order, not held in stock: there is a waiting list for every model.
How long does it take to receive a Sky Guitar?
The official site puts production at 'approximately 4–10 months, depending on the model and selected specifications', in other words four to ten months depending on the model and the options chosen. On top of that comes the waiting list, which according to the maker exists for every model.
Do you have to pay for the whole guitar up front?
No. According to the About us page at sky-guitars.com, an order requires a 50% deposit, with the balance paid before delivery. The same page states that prices exclude VAT or sales tax, import duties, customs fees and local taxes. Shipping costs are not specified, so that is something to ask the maker.
Where can you buy a second-hand Sky Guitar?
The units that turn up on the second-hand market are almost always from the Dean edition. There are listings on Reverb and at Ish Guitars, where a 2012 Dean Uli Jon Roth Sky Guitar #9 'Black Velvet Sky', signed by Uli, was listed at $11,999.99.
Does skyguitar.site sell guitars or handle orders?
No. skyguitar.site is an independent archive about the Sky Guitars, written in Spanish with a partial English edition. It does not sell, broker or appraise instruments, and it has no connection with UJR Sky Guitars or Uli Jon Roth. The only official place to order a new Sky Guitar is sky-guitars.com.
